NDA Mourns the Passing of Founding Member Richard P. Geppert
June 16, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Richard Paul Geppert of Geppert Bros. Inc., who died peacefully on June 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A founding member of the National Demolition Association, Richard was a revered figure in our industry, known not just for his professional contributions but also for the integrity, humility and warmth he brought into every facet of his life.
Alongside his brother, William A. Geppert Jr., Richard helped establish what would become one of the most respected demolition companies in the region. The work of Geppert Bros. Inc. — which began under their father, William Sr., in 1925 — reshaped the Philadelphia skyline and set the standard for excellence, safety and community commitment. Even after stepping back from active leadership, Richard’s presence continued to shape the company’s values and culture.
Born and raised in Germantown, Philadelphia, Richard believed in the school of lived experience. Though he attended many esteemed local Catholic schools, he often said everything he needed to know he learned from the demolition trade. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and maintained a steadfast faith throughout his life, attending the men’s retreat at Malvern Retreat House annually for over 70 years. His service to his church, his community and his family reflected a deep well of compassion and commitment.
Richard’s life was one of rich experiences and simple joys. He shared an extraordinary bond with his wife, Mary Pat, and embraced life’s adventures — from world travel and bungee jumping in New Zealand to quiet evenings on the deck with family. He cherished time spent with his stepchildren, Lars Paul Taboga (Mia Taboga) and Kimberly Kaphan (Mark Kaphan), his daughter, Trisha Haber, and his beloved grandchildren, Ella, Dylan and Max. Whether fishing, tending his koi pond, feeding ducks or cheering on the Eagles and Phillies, Richard found joy in the everyday and shared it generously with those around him.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sisters Marie Steinhauser and Joan Reed, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He now joins in peace his parents, William A. and Anna Marie Carberry Geppert; his brothers, William Jr., Joseph, and “Gentleman Jim”; and his sisters, Nancy Duff and Lorraine Sirianni.
Those who knew Richard will remember his stories, his laughter and his unwavering kindness. His home was always open, his table welcoming, and his spirit endlessly generous. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in the Geppert family, the company he helped build and the broader demolition industry, where his leadership helped lay the foundation for what NDA is today.
